LL Cool J, born James Todd Smith in Bay Shore, New York, is an American rapper and actor who emerged as a leading figure in mid-1980s new-school hip-hop. He signed with Def Jam in 1984 and released his debut single, ’I Need a Beat,’ in 1985, followed later that year by Radio, which sold more than 1 million copies.
